“PPR” is my first Quintuple Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. This is not a blend. It went from barrel one to barrel two to barrel three to barrel four to finally barrel five. This beer spent its first fourteen months in Evan Williams Bourbon barrels. After that, it spent ten months in Larceny Bourbon barrels. Then, it spent nine months in Old Fitzgerald Bourbon barrels. After that, it spent eight months in Henry McKenna Bourbon barrels. Finally, it spent its last six months in Elijah Craig 23 Year Old Bourbon barrels. It picked up a lot on angel’s share along the way those nearly four years and measures in at 19.0% ABV. I saved my new favorite vanilla combination to put this one over the edge. “PPR” is short for Papua New Guinea, Peruvian, and Reunion Island vanilla beans. While this Stout was great on its own coming out of the fifth barrel, the vanilla really showcases what that adjunct can do for complexity and depth in a beer that has spent so much time in oak. It only felt appropriate to name it after this amazing combo of three vanilla beans.
